Claire McCarthy is editor-in-chief of Northshore Magazine, a 6x/year glossy regional magazine covering Essex County. She began her journalism education as a women's studies major at U.Mass Amherst in the late '70s graduating with an individual concentration degree in "women and the media."

Claire earned her master's degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University in 1983. Her media career includes both on-air and behind-the-camera broadcasting, producing an award-winning short film, and reporting news for radio and print organizations including -- many moons ago -- the local outlets WCCM and Haverhill Gazette. She was staff writer for the national lifestyle magazine The Robb Report and freelance credits include The Boston Herald, People Magazine, and New York Post. Currently she is an occasional correspondent for NECN's TV Diner and The Boston Globe.

Claire's passions include travel, dining, and wine tasting and she'd love to find her life partner (hint!) to share those hobbies with. She has served on boards of several Merrimack Valley organizations, including the YMCA, Samaritans, and the Lawrence Rotary Club. Claire has acted, modeled, and has done standup comedy. Over the years the North Andover native has adventured on an African safari, lived in Montana, survived a week-long Outward Bound adventure and even jumped out of a plane once but needed crutches after landing imperfectly.

She is very excited about being involved with the wonderful Esperanza girls!

What draws you to Great Women to Know?

"I am drawn by the spirit and energy of the other members of GWTK and I look forward to whatever activity is scheduled next whether it's a board of directors' planning session, a thought-provoking social event, or something creative at the Academy like Shadow Day. I see the synergy created through the power of generous minds and hearts and genuine interest in something bigger than The Self. Plus we laugh a lot!"
