Paula Colby-Clements Invites Esperanza Girls to View MSL Court of Appeals

At the invitation of Paula Colby-Clements, GWTK member and Professor and Director of Admissions at Massachusetts School of Law (MSL), two 7 ^th grade Esperanza girls, Ashley and Alexa joined over 100 high schools students at MSL on Tuesday, November 10^th to watch a live sitting of the Massachusetts Court of Appeals. read more »

Great Women to Know are “Great Friends” to the Esperanza Graduates

The Freshman Friends program is well underway. Each of the 16 graduates from the Esperanza Academy Class of 2009 has been paired with a member of Great Women to Know. The Friends initially met at a dinner party just before graduation last June. GWTK sponsored a Book Swap during the summer for the Friends and their family members. Friends have gotten together to go shopping, to the beach, out to dinner and to the movies.

Star Award

Francheska attends Cathedral High School in Springfield, MA. The GWTK Star Award provides $1000 towards her high school tuition ($250 a year for four years). This helps to fund some of the gap between Cathedral’s financial aid package and Francheska’s family’s ability to pay. Without this gap funding, Francheska would be attending the Springfield Public High School (the Springfield public school system is often ranked worst in the state). read more »

“You can already see it. Look at what happened in Iran,” referring to Twitter providing immediate, first-hand accounts during the election chaos, even though the government shut down conventional media outlets.

Great Women to Know is pleased to once again sponsor Esperanza Academy's Breakfast of Hope on Thursday, April 16 from 8-9 AM at the Andover Country Club. For those of you new to the group, the Breakfast of Hope is Esperanza's annual fund and "friendraiser," designed to attract new supporters to the school from the surrounding communities and beyond. Please consider being a Table Captain. This role is vital to the event's success and involves filling a table of ten (you, seven guests and two Esperanza representatives). read more »

GWTK Earns Kudos from State Senator Sue Tucker

Massachusetts State Senator Sue Tucker reached out to Great Women to Know to offer her congratulations on the success of Shadow Day and the principles behind it. In a letter to Sue Wilson, Senator Tucker wrote, "I am a firm believer in the importance of strong female role models for young women and am impressed by the work of your organization." Senator Tucker, an enthusiastic supporter of Esperanza Academy, learned of Shadow Day by reading the coverage of the event in the Andover Townsman.

Adriana Silvestre's Inspirational Design Graces Shadow Day T-Shirts

Cheryl Juba of B Sporty coordinated the second annual Esperanza Shadow Day t-shirt design contest. She visited the school in January and met with all the students to explain the rules of the contest. The girls were invited to draw a picture that represents their dreams and hopes for their future. The teachers would vote one winning design that would then be screen printed by B Sporty on t-shirts for all the students at Esperanza to wear on the February 2 Shadow Day event. This year's winner was Adriana Silvestre who is an 8th grader. read more »

LAWRENCE, MA February 2, 2009 - While the eyes of the nation were focused on the movements of a sleepy groundhog, Esperanza Academy students had their sights fixed on the future. In its 2nd annual Shadow Day, Esperanza Academy and Great Women to Know teamed up to provide the school's 80 girls, in grades 5-8, an opportunity to learn about a wide range of careers, and to experience first-hand what it's like to be a veterinarian, a lawyer, a pediatrician, a banker, a retail business owner and more. read more »

Managing Change: Case in Point
